Bio
Short Biography of Ruben Reyes
I was born in Dimmit, Texas, on March 21, 1964. My parents moved to Lubbock when I was 3-4 years old and I consider Lubbock my hometown.
I graduated from Dunbar High School in 1982 as class valedictorian. This was a major event for my family as I was the first in my family to graduate from high school. I consider this an important achievement as I worked a full time job while attending high school.
I knew nothing about the process of getting into college such as applying to college or obtaining financial aid. The school counselors at Dunbar and at LEARN Inc. helped me. I was accepted to and attended Texas Tech for 1 year and decided I wanted to experience life outside of Lubbock. One of my ex-high school teachers advised me I could apply to other colleges as a transfer student. I applied to several and was accepted to Yale in New Haven, Connecticut.
As the tuition and living expenses were very expensive, I received financial aid as well as worked while attending Yale. The 3 years I spent in New Haven were an incredible growing experience. My years at Yale were good, but tough. They were difficult academically but also challenging personally. I graduated from Yale in 1986, with a B.A. in Economics and Political Science.
After college I knew I wanted to return to Texas for law school. I applied to every law school in Texas. After a 1-year sabbatical, I chose Baylor Law School in Waco, Texas. I attended Baylor from 1987-1990. After law school, I returned to Lubbock where I have practiced my entire career. I was a civil law attorney with the majority of my cases involving family law. Initially, I worked for the law firm of Hurley and Sowder. On June 1, 1994 I became a partner and the firm’s name changed to Hurley, Sowder & Reyes. On May 1, 2000 that firm changed and was named Hurley, Reyes and Guinn.
On April 27, 1991 I married Melanie Raff from Borger, Texas. We have two great kids, Ross and Hannah. I am very involved with their school and extracurricular activities. We attend church at Church on the Rock and we are very involved in our church.
